Given that we live in a time when so many telecommunications companies are advertising “faster than ever” Internet speeds, why is it that so many business owners are dissatisfied with the web connections they have in their offices (not to mention the bills they are paying for them)?

In some cases, the answer might have to do with the types of Internet solutions they have chosen. As we’ve written about recently, using home-class routers or web connections in an office setting is bound to lead to performance problems.

One other thing to consider, however, is that these companies might be relying on the wrong technology and service providers to start with. Here at Bay Area Computers, we have become big fans of copper Ethernet and microwave web connections — emerging technologies that a lot of business leaders aren’t yet familiar with.

Not only do both offer strong and affordable web connections, but they can give you significant savings over the types of cable and DSL configurations that too many small businesses are relying on. To understand why, here are the key details you need to know about each one:

Copper Ethernet. In decades past, before fiber optics became the default tool for high-speed web connections, companies and municipalities went to work laying copper lines throughout North America and beyond to accommodate telephone communication. Those lines are still in place, and can be used to facilitate Ethernet over copper (EoC) connections. Not only are these quick and affordable, but unlike fiber optics, they transmit through multiple strands of wire, so your connection can survive damage or cutting of a single line. That means EoC connections can be fast and reliable.

Microwave Internet connections. These basically amount to the different variation on broadband, allowing for a more consistent transmission over greater distances. To put things differently, that means you can have a fast and reliable web connection almost anywhere, without the “dead spots” you find with poor DSL connections or low-quality wireless configurations. That means that high-speed access can be set up even in areas without lots of infrastructure, or as a lower-cost way to reliably bring high-speed Internet service to any office or facility.
